SubhanAllah! Alhamdulillah! came across one of the beautiful chapters in Holy Quran, surah nahl (bees).
Even though, I have flipped through this surah before as well but subhanAllah when we pause and reflect then we truly understand the hidden gems of Allah Al-Hakeem’s kalaam.
There is an entire surah in the Holy Quran with the name of bees. The Arabic word “نحل” (nahl) refers to bees in general, not specifically honeybees. However, in the context of Surah An-Nahl (16:68-69) in the Holy Quran, the reference is to honeybees.
While reading surah nahl, I came across these ayah, and they grabbed my attention.
وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحْلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِى مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًۭا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ ٦٨
“And your Lord inspired the (honey) bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct,
ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ فَٱسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًۭا ۚ يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌۭ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ فِيهِ شِفَآءٌۭ لِّلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ٦٩
and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you. From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colours, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.”
Surah Nahl ayah 68-69
I was amazed by these ayah, for me, it was quite intriguing that Allah ta’ala is mentioning that there is ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ “Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.”
I, then started researching about honey bees, as I had little knowledge about them, even watched few documentaries on them, and then while researching here and there,
I also came across a beautiful hadith on honey bees.
“The example of a believer is like that of a bee: It consumes what is pure and produces what is pure. When it lands on something, it does not break or ruin it.”
(Source: Musnad Aḥmad 6872)
SubhanAllah! such a beautiful hadith that compares believers to bees.
InshaAllah! will put forward few reflections based on the above hadith, and in the light of information gathered upon honeybees through documentaries and researches.
Just like a bee feeds on only pure nectar, a believer should consume only halal, wholesome pure things, and it is not confined only to food but it also means that the believer should consume good, pure content, have good company so that the outcome is also pure and beneficial, just as a bee produces pure honey that nourishes people, and there is healing and shifa in it.
Believers should be healing to the ailing people, ailing world.
What is astounding is the fact that a bee extracts nectar without harming the flower. It doesn’t break the flower. Believers should be gentle in their interactions, avoiding harm and spreading kindness wherever they go. Just as bees do not break the flowers while gathering nectar, we too should nurture our relationships with care and gratitude. We should not burden those we benefit from with unnecessary excessive expectations, to the point that they reach their breaking point. Instead, we should cultivate relationships with sincerity, appreciation.
Another interesting and noteworthy point is that honeybees take nectar from flowers to produce honey, but in return, they pollinate the flowers, allowing plants to reproduce and sustain ecosystems. This means that bees give far more than they take, benefiting the environment and countless other creatures. Similarly, believers should strive to be givers rather than takers. Their presence should nurture and uplift others, just as bees help flowers bloom while taking their own sustenance. Beautiful isn’t it?

Ever wondered about the hexagonal shape of honeycombs? SubhanAllah! It is not something random. The hexagon shape uses the least amount of wax while providing the most storage space for honey. This allows bees to save energy and resources, making their work highly efficient. Allah Al-Hakeem has designed bees to naturally adopt the most optimal engineering principle. The hexagonal pattern distributes weight evenly, making it strong and durable.
It allows the hive to hold large amounts of honey without collapsing. The structure is self-supporting, reducing the need for extra reinforcement. Unlike circles or squares, hexagons fit together perfectly without any gaps. This ensures that every part of the hive is used efficiently. Just as bees do not waste space or resources, believers should also manage their time, energy, and resources wisely. Islam teaches us to avoid extravagance and waste. The honeycomb structure is strong because of its connection, each supports the others. Likewise, believers should stand together and support one another, as the Prophet ﷺ said – “The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like a single body. If one part of it feels pain, the rest of the body responds with sleeplessness and fever.”(source – sahih bukhari, sahih muslim).
Bees are incredibly hardworking and dedicated to their tasks. Believers should be diligent in their acts, never wasting time in idleness. Bees work in a highly organized system, each with a role that benefits the hive. As believers, we all have a role to play as organised beings, and we should not underestimate our roles.
It is reported that the bees travel around 90,000 miles (about 145,000 kilometers) to gather enough nectar to produce one pound (approximately 453 grams) of honey.
SubhanAllah! to produce this amount, bees must visit approximately 2 million flowers.
This incredible effort highlights the bees’ dedication, teamwork, and perseverance, qualities that believers are encouraged to embody in their lives.
Allah Al-Haadi has guided honeybees to communicate with each other through a remarkable behavior called the “waggle dance.” When a bee finds a good source of nectar, it returns to the hive and performs this dance to share the exact coordinates of the flowers with other bees. This ensures that the whole colony benefits from the discovery, rather than keeping it to itself. Just as bees selflessly share beneficial knowledge for the good of their hive, believers should share wisdom, guidance, and opportunities with others.
Alhamdulilah! Bees produce honey, which benefits humans and other creatures. Believers should strive to benefit others through beneficial knowledge of Islam as a deen, and providing the ailing mankind with the system which is rahmah and shifa (healing) for all.
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
“Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect.”
May we reflect upon the Holy Quran as we are obliged to do.
May Allah An-Na’afi – The Benefactor enable us to benefit all around us, and the entire world.

سبحان اللہ! الحمد للہ! میں نے قرآن پاک کے ایک نہایت خوبصورت باب، سورہ نحل (شہد کی مکھیوں) کا مطالعہ کیا۔
اگرچہ میں نے اس سورہ کو پہلے بھی پڑھا تھا، لیکن سبحان اللہ! جب ہم رک کر غور و فکر کرتے ہیں تو تب ہی ہمیں اللہ الحکیم کے کلام میں پوشیدہ قیمتی جواہرات کا ادراک ہوتا ہے۔
قرآن پاک میں ایک مکمل سورہ شہد کی مکھیوں کے نام سے موجود ہے۔ عربی لفظ “نحل” عام طور پر مکھیوں کے لیے استعمال ہوتا ہے، تاہم، سورہ نحل (16:68-69) میں شہد کی مکھیوں کا خاص طور پر ذکر کیا گیا ہے۔
جب میں سورہ نحل کی ان آیات تک پہنچا تو وہ میرے لیے بے حد متاثر کن ثابت ہوئیں:
وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى ٱلنَّحْلِ أَنِ ٱتَّخِذِى مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًۭا وَمِنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ وَمِمَّا يَعْرِشُونَ ٦٨
“اور تمہارے رب نے شہد کی مکھی کو وحی کی کہ پہاڑوں میں، درختوں میں اور جو چھتیں لوگ بناتے ہیں، ان میں اپنے گھر بنا۔”
ثُمَّ كُلِى مِن كُلِّ ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ فَٱسْلُكِى سُبُلَ رَبِّكِ ذُلُلًۭا ۚ يَخْرُجُ مِنۢ بُطُونِهَا شَرَابٌۭ مُّخْتَلِفٌ أَلْوَٰنُهُۥ فِيهِ شِفَآءٌۭ لِّلنَّاسِ ۗ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ٦٩
“پھر ہر قسم کے پھلوں سے رس چوس، اور اپنے رب کے نرم کئے ہوئے راستوں پر چل، ان کے پیٹ سے مختلف رنگوں کا ایک مشروب نکلتا ہے جس میں لوگوں کے لیے شفا ہے، یقیناً اس میں ان لوگوں کے لیے نشانی ہے جو غور و فکر کرتے ہیں۔”
(سورہ نحل 68-69)
مجھے یہ آیات بہت حیران کن لگیں، کیونکہ اللہ تعالیٰ فرما رہے ہیں:
“إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ”
“یقیناً اس میں ان لوگوں کے لیے نشانی ہے جو غور و فکر کرتے ہیں۔”
پھر میں نے شہد کی مکھیوں کے بارے میں تحقیق شروع کی کیونکہ مجھے ان کے بارے میں زیادہ معلومات نہیں تھیں۔ میں نے اس موضوع پر کچھ (documentaries)دستاویزی فلمیں بھی دیکھیں، اور تحقیق کے دوران میں نے شہد کی مکھیوں کے متعلق ایک نہایت خوبصورت حدیث بھی پڑھی:
“مومن کی مثال شہد کی مکھی کی طرح ہے: وہ پاک چیز کھاتی ہے اور پاک چیز ہی پیدا کرتی ہے۔ جب وہ کسی چیز پر بیٹھتی ہے، تو نہ اسے توڑتی ہے اور نہ ہی خراب کرتی ہے۔”
(مسند احمد 6872)
سبحان اللہ! کتنی خوبصورت حدیث ہے جو مؤمن کو مکھی سے تشبیہ دیتی ہے۔
مؤمن کو شہد کی مکھی سے کیا سیکھنا چاہیے؟
جس طرح شہد کی مکھی صرف خالص اور پاکیزہ رس چوستی ہے، اسی طرح ایک مؤمن کو بھی صرف حلال اور طیب چیزوں کو اختیار کرنا چاہیے۔ اس کا اطلاق صرف کھانے پر نہیں، بلکہ خیالات، صحبت، اور ان چیزوں پر بھی ہوتا ہے جو ہم سنتے اور دیکھتے ہیں۔ پاکیزہ خوراک، اچھی صحبت اور نیک اعمال کا نتیجہ بھی پاکیزہ اور مفید ہونا چاہیے، جس طرح شہد کی مکھی خالص شہد تیار کرتی ہے جو دوسروں کے لیے شفا کا ذریعہ بنتا ہے۔
شہد کی مکھی جب پھول سے رس چوستی ہے تو اسے توڑتی یا نقصان نہیں پہنچاتی۔ اسی طرح مؤمن کو بھی نرمی اور مہربانی سے پیش آنا چاہیے، اور اپنے تعلقات میں دوسروں پر غیر ضروری بوجھ ڈالنے سے گریز کرنا چاہیے تاکہ وہ ٹوٹ نہ جائیں۔
مکھیاں نہ صرف شہد پیدا کرتی ہیں بلکہ وہ پھولوں کی pollination
زراعت میں مدد کرتی ہیں اور ecosystem
کے لیے فائدہ مند ہوتی ہیں۔ اسی طرح مؤمن کو بھی ہمیشہ دوسروں کو فائدہ پہنچانے کی کوشش کرنی چاہیے، نہ کہ صرف لینے کی۔
شہد کی مکھیوں کے چھتے مسدس (Hexagonal) شکل میں ہوتے ہیں، جو سب سے زیادہ مضبوط، منظم، اور کم جگہ میں زیادہ ذخیرہ کرنے کی صلاحیت رکھتے ہیں۔ اللہ تعالیٰ نے مکھیوں کو سب سے زیادہ مؤثر طریقے سے چھتہ بنانے کی حکمت عطا کی ہے۔ یہی اصول مؤمن کی زندگی میں بھی ہونا چاہیے اپنے وقت، وسائل اور توانائی کو بہترین طریقے سے استعمال کرنا۔
مکھیاں منظم اور باہمی تعاون سے کام کرتی ہیں، ہر مکھی اپنی ذمہ داری نبھاتی ہے۔ مؤمنوں کو بھی اسی طرح اجتماعی فلاح کے لیے کام کرنا چاہیے، جیسا کہ نبی کریم ﷺ نے فرمایا:
“مؤمن آپس میں ایک جسم کی مانند ہیں، اگر جسم کے کسی ایک عضو کو تکلیف ہو، تو پورا جسم بخار اور بے خوابی میں مبتلا ہو جاتا ہے۔”
(صحیح بخاری، صحیح مسلم)
شہد کی مکھیاں ایک پاؤنڈ شہد تیار کرنے کے لیے تقریباً 90,000 میل (145,000 کلومیٹر) تک سفر کرتی ہیں اور 20 لاکھ پھولوں سے رس حاصل کرتی ہیں۔ سبحان اللہ! یہ محنت، قربانی، اور استقامت کا ایک اعلیٰ نمونہ ہے جو مؤمن کی زندگی کا حصہ ہونا چاہیے۔
جب کوئی مکھی کسی اچھی جگہ کا پتہ لگاتی ہے تو وہ
“Waggle Dance” کے ذریعے دوسرے مکھیوں کو صحیح راستہ بتاتی ہے، تاکہ سب کو فائدہ پہنچے۔ یہی اصول مؤمن کے لیے ہے وہ خیر اور علم کو دوسروں تک پہنچائے اور کسی بھی نیکی کو اپنے تک محدود نہ رکھے۔
الحمدللہ! مکھیوں کی پیدا کردہ شہد صرف انسانوں کے لیے ہی نہیں، بلکہ دیگر مخلوقات کے لیے بھی فائدہ مند ہوتا ہے۔ مؤمن کو بھی اسی طرح دنیا کے لیے رحمت اور ہدایت کا ذریعہ بننا چاہیے، کیونکہ اسلام انسانیت کے لیے رحمت اور شفا ہے۔
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةًۭ لِّقَوْمٍۢ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
(یقیناً اس میں ان لوگوں کے لیے نشانی ہے جو غور و فکر
کرتے ہیں۔)
اسلام ایک مکمل دین ہے اور پوری انسانیت کے لیے شفا ہے.
اللّٰہ ہمیں قرآن پاک پر غور و فکر کرنے کی توفیق عطا فرمائے۔
اللّٰہ النافع ہمیں دوسروں کے لیے فائدہ مند بنائے، اور تمام دنیا کے لیے رحمت کا ذریعہ بنائے۔
