The Dandelion- A beautiful flower and also a weed

These are the times when Dandelions are a common sight across Canada that is in late spring and early summer.

Dandelions are beautiful flowers and are labelled as weeds too. But SubhanAllah! interestingly they are a remedy too. They are beautiful yet they cause harm. And thus, they are one of Allah Al- Hakeem’s signs in soil to get inspired for many lessons in our lives.

Dandelions are technically classified as weeds, yet their cheerful yellow colour is something your eyes will get attracted to instantly so much so that despite knowing it is a weed, I was gifted these beauties by someone due to their visual appeal.

Dandelions spread aggressively, taking over lawns and gardens all uninvited. But their pollen and fine particles trigger seasonal allergies, causing real issues for many. Yet! interestingly, the same plant offers dandelion root tea, widely used for liver detox and digestion. The leaves are nutrient-dense, rich in vitamins A, C, and K. Dandelion has even been studied for anti-inflammatory properties.

SubhanAllah! One plant as intruder, weed and having healing properties all together.

The dandelion, often pulled from the soil as purposeless, actually was never created without reason. It fixes nitrogen in soil, feeds early-spring bees when little else blooms.

Another remarkable point-
A dandelion does not ask where it is allowed to grow.It grows in abandoned land, in cracks of pavement, between fence posts, in the middle of manicured gardens. And this can be seen as a lesson in two directions-

1 – For good deeds- Spread without waiting for perfect conditions. Plant what is beneficial generously, the way the dandelion does.

2-For harmful habits and speech- This is also exactly how sin and rumour travel, effortlessly.

The Holy Quran warns of those who spread corruption without realizing the weight of what they scatter.

Was also thinking on the other side that how we as humans are instinctively drawn to what is visually appealing. The dandelions as radiant, warm, are impossible to ignore. Yet it carries pollen that closes throats and causes watery eyes… And it reminded me of one of the Holy Quran’s warning-
“And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.” (Translation of Al-Baqarah: 204)

The dandelion reminds us that do not let beauty alone be your compass be it in speech eloquence or anything else. Assess with baseerah (insight), not just with eyes.

There are people who will please us, and they also call to witness Allah what is in their hearts yet they are the fiercest of opponents. This is something we, as believers, should understand that it is really tough to identify such opponents due to their appealing appearances and perhaps that is why we are told to make dua of showing the reality of all things as they truly are.

“Ya Allah, show us truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it, and show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the ability to avoid it.”

People are different from dandelions, they are experts in hiding, but dandelions never hid what it was, it simply grew, and it was we who assumed outward appealing appearances meant complete harmlessness. And Perhaps, that assumption in itself is the lesson for us all.

May Allah Al-Baseer bless us all with baseerah to identify the flowers and the weeds, and grant us the wisdom to know how to engage with each of them in a way that serves our growth and our deen.
